I’ve been teaching 5th grade at Discovery Elementary since 2002. I have led our Student Council and served as Team leader for the 5th grade. I am on our school’s Technology committee, Continuous Improvement Plan committee, and the District’s ELL committee. I enjoy reading and watching movies of all genres, attending plays and musicals, figuring out and learning new technology, and playing (ahem, cough) the occasional video game. I also like to rollerblade, travel, have picnics and dinners with my family and friends, and eat really superb food. My favorite way to spend my time, however, is with my two children and pets: Doing anything or nothing. In the future, I would like to learn to fly (an airplane, not with wings attached to my arms) and drive the Old Alaskan Highway and the length of Route 66. I’m beginning to form the thought that I would also like to do a long walking-trek… Our classroom is set-up to encourage independent thinking and learning. It is a positive, safe, fun environment that encourages students to take risks in their learning. Resources and procedures are available all of the time for students to utilize on their own. It is a student-centered classroom where students guide the learning to take place each day. Although instruction and learning intimately follow the Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), students have a wide range in the activities and products they produce to show their learning. Regularly, students create their own activities to help them practice new skills and concepts. Differentiated Instruction, Bloom’s Taxonomy, Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, HUMOR, independence, and respect for everyone’s individual level and way of learning are at the core of our classroom community.
