·        The main idea of the paper is clear and the message or story is interesting—maybe even memorable.

·        The writer has an in-depth understanding of the topic.

·        The writer is selective, picking out unusual or interesting details that hold the reader’s attention.

·        The reader can easily identify the main idea.

·        The writer knows about the topic and writes convincingly.

·        The writer includes interesting details.

·        The main idea is a little unclear.  It is not always easy to determine what the writer is trying to say.

·        The details are present but minimal.  Much of the writing consists of general statements that do little to expand the main idea.

·        The writer is still searching for a main idea.  The writing consists mainly of random thoughts or notes.

·        The reader cannot find anything meaningful.

·        Details are sketchy or absent.  The paper simply does not say much.
