Home Journals

Home Journals are essentially our weekly classroom newsletters, but written by each student for his/her family. Parents are expected to read and write back to his/her child, or sign the Home Journal if they have a verbal discussion. This helps students become more clear in their explanations and also allows families to really talk about, and participate in, their child's learning.  Below are links to the classroom brainstorm sheet we do all together before students write their own letter home in their Home Journals.

Why do we write Home Journals?

    1. To practice written communication
    2. To practice adding details so readers can see in their minds what we are doing
    3. To communicate our school learning to our families
    4. To write for an authentic audience
    5. To write for a meaningful purpose
    6. To practice writing in a variety of forms
