Accelerated Reading (AR) is an independent reading
program where students choose any books they like within their reading level.
In the first trimester, students are required to read a minimum of 700 pages.
Students follow the AR Process
and keep track of their reading. Reading
is expected to happen during the school day and is assigned for homework each
night Monday-Friday. AR book lists can be found at our
Discovery library
website and at the King County Library
website. In addition, students
can find the reading level of books at the
Renaissance Learning website
(renlearn.com>order quizzes>search by title/author).
Read Aloud books are our
class novels.
Our class
novels are historical fiction and follow the American History timeline that we
are learning in social studies. We read the book aloud during snack time and
students fill out a Literacy Circle sheet each week. On Fridays,
students meet in their Literacy Circle groups and discuss that week’s reading
with each other.
McGraw Hill is the District reading curriculum. In our
class, McGraw Hill is used to introduce new reading skills and concepts.
McGraw Hill and picture books are perfect for this since their stories are
short and easy for students to see the beginning, middle, and end. Before,
during, and after reading we are also applying these skills and concepts to
our Read Aloud books and AR independent books.
